Volkswagen radio code from your serial

Your VW radio serial starts VWZ and is on the radio card in the handbook wallet or on a label on the radio. VW codes can’t be worked out, only looked up, so the free check tells you whether we hold yours before you pay.

About Volkswagen radio codes

Volkswagen radios from the mid-1990s to about 2015 – the Alpha, Beta and Gamma, the RCD 200 to RCD 510 and the RNS sat navs – all use a 14-character serial starting VWZ. Their codes were set at the factory, so every VW code we sell comes out of a code list rather than a calculation.

Where the VWZ serial is (and the radio card)

Start with the handbook wallet. VW supplied a paper radio card with the car, and it shows the serial and often the code too. The card is only right for the radio the car was built with, so if the radio might have been changed, check the card’s serial against the radio’s label.

No card? VW radios never show the serial on screen, so the radio has to come out. A single-height radio comes out with two flat release keys; the taller RCD 510 and the RNS sat navs usually need four. How to remove a car radio shows where they go.

The serial is on a sticker or engraved label on the top, side or back: VWZ and 11 more letters and numbers, like VWZ1Z2S4292662. On these an O is a letter, not a zero. The label also carries a part number with 035 in the middle, which isn’t the serial.

SAFE, and how long to wait

SAFE on the display means the radio has lost power and wants its code. About three seconds later it shows 1000, ready for you. Buttons 1 to 4 set each number (press again to count up), and you finish by holding one of the seek arrows for 2 seconds or more.

After too many wrong codes it shows SAFE with a small number beside it and won’t take another try for a while. Leave the radio switched on, with the ignition on, for an hour, then put in the right code. Guessing in between only adds more waiting.

VW radios we can’t do

The Composition and Discover touchscreens that replaced the RCD radios – from 2012 on the Golf, about 2015 on the Passat, Touran, Caddy and Transporter, and 2017 on the Polo – are matched to the car rather than locked with a code. There is no code to find from a serial, so a VW dealer or a specialist is the route.

Some VW-group radios switch on after a battery change but stay silent. That is usually the radio being matched to the car, not asking for a code. If the display never asks for a code, you don’t need one.

Why we can’t do every VW serial

VW codes can’t be calculated from the serial: no formula turns one into the other. The only way to get one is to look the serial up in a list of serials and their codes. We hold many of those, but not all, so there is a real chance yours isn’t one we have.

That is why the check is free and comes first. If we don’t hold your serial, it says so and you pay nothing. Before you give up, compare it with the label character by character, because a single wrong one is enough to miss.

Still not there? The radio card or a VW dealer are the other ways to get the code, and our free radio code guide covers both. Or ask us — if we can’t do your radio we’ll say so straight away.

How to find your Volkswagen radio serial number

The serial isn’t shown on the screen: it is printed on a label on the radio itself. The serial tells us exactly which code your radio needs.

Where it is

On the label

  1. Check the radio card in the handbook wallet first.
  2. Otherwise take the radio out with radio removal keys.
  3. Copy the serial from the label: 14 letters and numbers starting VWZ, AUZ, SKZ or SEZ.

Photograph the label rather than copying it by hand — 0 and O, 1 and I are easy to mix up.

RADIOPush both keys in until they click, then pull the radio forward

Most radios slide out with a pair of radio removal keys (a few pounds from any car parts shop). Push them into the slots on the front until they click, then ease the radio forward. Some have screws to undo first.

Popular Volkswagen models

How to enter your Volkswagen radio code

Once you have your code, key it in like this. Your order page shows the same steps next to your code.

VW group (Beta, Gamma, RCD, Concert…)

  1. Buttons 1 to 4 set each number (press again to count up).
  2. Hold one of the arrow (seek) buttons for 2 seconds or more to finish.

If your Volkswagen radio says LOCKED, WAIT or SAFE

Each wrong code makes the radio wait longer before the next try, and some radios lock for good after too many. Don’t guess: get the right code first, then follow the steps for your radio.

VW group (Beta, Gamma, RCD, Concert…)SAFE — leave the radio on for 1 hour (the ignition must stay on), then try again.

Why we use your radio’s serial, not your number plate

A radio code belongs to the radio, not the car. A dealer usually looks it up from the Volkswagen’s number plate or VIN (the 17-character number in your logbook), which only works if the car still has the radio it left the factory with. Radios are often swapped under warranty, upgraded, or changed by a previous owner.

The serial is printed on the radio itself, so the code matches the radio in front of you. It is also what lets us check for free before you pay. Main dealers often charge £30–£130, and you usually have to book the car in.

What we can and can’t do

We can do

  • Alpha, Beta, Gamma, RCD 200, 210, 300, 310, 500 and 510, and RNS sat navs
  • VWZ serials that are in our code lists — the free check looks yours up

We can’t do (yet)

  • Composition and Discover touchscreens (2012 on in the Golf, about 2015 on in most others) — matched to the car
  • VWZ serials that aren’t in our code lists — the free check tells you before you pay

We always tell you before you pay. Not sure? Send us a photo of the label.

Volkswagen radio code questions

Where is the serial on a VW radio?

On the paper radio card in the handbook wallet, and on a label on the radio itself. VW radios never show it on screen. It is 14 characters starting VWZ, like VWZ1Z2S4292662.

Why did the free check say you don’t have my VW code?

Because VW codes can’t be calculated, only looked up, and that serial isn’t in the lists we hold. Check each character against the label first: one wrong one is enough to miss. If it is right, the radio card or a VW dealer are the routes left, and you haven’t paid anything.

My VW radio shows SAFE and a small number. How long do I wait?

An hour, with the radio and the ignition on the whole time, then put in the right code. Plain SAFE with no number just means it wants its code, and you can put it in straight away.

Can you unlock a VW Composition or Discover touchscreen?

No. Those are matched to the car rather than locked with a code, so there is no code to find from a serial. A VW dealer or specialist can match one.

Is the code on my VW radio card still right?

Only for the radio the car was built with. Radios are often swapped, so check that the serial on the card matches the label on the radio before you use it: a card for a different radio gives a wrong code.

How much is a Volkswagen radio code?

£9.99 per code. The free check comes first, so you only pay once we know we can do it, and you get your money back if the code doesn’t work.

How long does it take?

Most Volkswagen codes appear on screen the moment you’ve paid, and we email you a copy. If yours has to be looked up by our team, we email it within 2 hours and tell you before you pay.

What if the code doesn’t work?

Check the serial first: 0 and O, or 1 and I, are easy to mix up. Still stuck? Tell us from your order page and we’ll put it right or refund you in full.
