About Renault radio codes
Most Renaults from the mid-1990s to about 2012 have a Tuner List or Update List radio that gives a short precode instead of a long serial. The same radios went into vans and cars sold under other badges: the Vauxhall Vivaro and Movano, the Nissan Primastar, Interstar and Kubistar, older Dacias, the Mercedes-Benz Citan and the Fiat Talento.
Where the Renault precode shows up
On most Renaults it appears on the radio’s own display: switch the radio on and, while it is asking for the code, hold buttons 1 and 6 for about 5 seconds. The first character is a letter, even when the display makes it look like a number.
Some Renaults have no display on the radio itself. The precode then shows on the separate screen on top of the dashboard, and on some of those the code is put in with the stalk on the steering column rather than the radio’s buttons.
If nothing appears, the precode is on the label on the side of the radio, in a box marked PRE CODE or as the last 4 characters of the long barcode line. You can type that whole line in and we’ll pick the precode out of it.
Precode or RN serial?
Renaults from about 1989 to 1997 may have an earlier Philips-made radio, which gives no precode. Its serial is on the label: 14 letters and numbers starting RN, like RN279FY1234567. Those radios have to come out of the dash to be read.
Don’t mix RN up with RG. A serial starting RG belongs to a Rover radio, not a Renault, and goes on our Rover page.
Putting the code in, and what WAIT means
Buttons 1, 2, 3 and 4 set each number of the code. Then hold button 6 for about 5 seconds, until the radio beeps.
Too many wrong codes and the display shows WAIT or ERROR. Leave the radio switched on for 30 to 60 minutes and it will let you try again. Before you do, check the precode once more: read one character wrong and you get the code for a different radio.
Touchscreen Renaults from about 2010
MediaNav and R-Link touchscreens, on many Renaults from about 2010 and most from 2012, have no precode. Their code is linked to the car, so it can’t be worked out from the radio, and a Renault dealer is the place to ask.
The vans changed too. The Trafic and Master from 2014, and the Vauxhall Vivaro and Movano from about 2015, have radios linked to the van. If holding buttons 1 and 6 still shows a precode, though, type it in: the free check will tell you.
How to find your Renault radio serial number
Most Renault radios show their serial on the screen, so you don’t need to take anything apart. The serial tells us exactly which code your radio needs.
On the screen
- Switch the radio on.
- Hold buttons 1 and 6 together for about 5 seconds.
- The screen shows a letter and 3 numbers (like A123). That is your precode.
- Nothing shows? Check the separate screen on top of the dashboard, or look for "PRE CODE" on the radio’s label.
On the label
The serial is also printed on a label on the top or side of the radio. Most radios slide out with a pair of radio removal keys (a few pounds from any car parts shop). Push them into the slots on the front until they click, then ease the radio forward. Some have screws to undo first.
Photograph the label rather than copying it by hand — 0 and O, 1 and I are easy to mix up.

If your Renault radio says LOCKED, WAIT or SAFE
Each wrong code makes the radio wait longer before the next try, and some radios lock for good after too many. Don’t guess: get the right code first, then follow the steps for your radio.

Why we use your radio’s serial, not your number plate
A radio code belongs to the radio, not the car. A dealer usually looks it up from the Renault’s number plate or VIN (the 17-character number in your logbook), which only works if the car still has the radio it left the factory with. Radios are often swapped under warranty, upgraded, or changed by a previous owner.
The serial is printed on the radio itself, so the code matches the radio in front of you. It is also what lets us check for free before you pay. Main dealers often charge £30–£130, and you usually have to book the car in.

Renault radio code questions
Where does my Renault radio show the precode?
On its own display, when you hold buttons 1 and 6 for about 5 seconds. Cars with a separate screen on top of the dashboard show it there instead. Failing that, it is on the label on the radio, in a box marked PRE CODE.
Is the Renault precode the same as the radio code?
No. The precode identifies your radio, and the 4-number code is worked out from it. That is why the precode is all we need.
How long does my Renault radio make me wait after a wrong code?
When it shows WAIT or ERROR, leave it switched on for 30–60 minutes and it will take another try. Check the precode again before you use it.
Do I need to take my Renault radio out?
Almost never, because the precode shows on screen. Only the Philips-made radios of about 1989 to 1997, with an RN serial on the label, have to come out.
Will this work for a Renault Trafic, Kangoo or Master?
Yes, as long as the van has a button radio that shows a precode: the Trafic and Master up to 2014, and the Kangoo before the MediaNav years. Hold buttons 1 and 6 just as you would in a car.
Can you do a Renault MediaNav or R-Link code?
No. Those touchscreens have no precode, because their code is linked to the car rather than the radio. A Renault dealer can help with them.
