Which radio is in your MG MGF?

MG fitted different radios over the years. Find your MGF’s years below, but go by the serial: radios are often swapped, and the free check reads it for you.

1995–1999MGF Mk1 Philips-built Rover radios 14 characters on the label, starting AR or RG Instant

How to find your MG MGF radio serial number

The serial isn’t shown on the screen: it is printed on a label on the radio itself. The serial tells us exactly which code your radio needs.

Where it is

On the label

  1. Some radios show it: hold DISP or DISPLAY for a few seconds.
  2. Otherwise take the radio out and take a photo of the label.
  3. Copy all 14 letters and numbers, like BP3782R3701682.

Take a photo of the label rather than copying it by hand: it’s easy to mix up 0 and O, or 1 and I.

RADIOPush both keys in until they click, then pull the radio forward

Most radios slide out with a pair of radio removal keys (a few pounds from any car parts shop). Push them into the slots on the front until they click, then ease the radio forward. Some have screws to undo first.

Tips for your MG MGF

  • The maker’s name on the front tells you which serial to expect: AR/RG for the Philips radios, BP for Blaupunkt.
  • Most come out on release keys; the later Blaupunkt has a small flap at each end hiding a bolt.
  • Nothing shows the serial on screen, so the radio has to come out.

How to enter your MG MGF radio code

Once you have your code, key it in like this. The example below shows the button presses. Your order page shows the same steps next to your code.

DISPLAY~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~!!!!!!CODE!!!!!!123456BUTTONS 1–6
Press button 1 twice for 2, button 2 five times for 5, button 3 eight times for 8, button 4 four times for 4, then hold button 5 for a couple of seconds to confirm.
  1. Buttons 1 to 4 each set one number.
  2. Hold button 5 (or the tuning knob) to finish.
  3. Won’t go above 1 for the first number? Use the second code we give you.

If your MG MGF radio says LOCKED, WAIT or SAFE

Each wrong code makes the radio wait longer before the next try, and some radios lock for good after too many. Don’t guess: get the right code first, then follow the steps for your radio.

RadioWhat to do
Blaupunkt / BoschAfter a wrong code, most Blaupunkt radios make you wait before the next try, and the wait gets longer each time. Leave the radio switched on until it asks for the code again.
Rover / MG / Mini PhilipsErr or WAIT: the wait gets longer each time. Keep the radio switched on.

Why we use your radio’s serial, not your number plate

A radio code belongs to the radio, not the car. A dealer usually looks it up from the MG MGF’s number plate or VIN (the 17-character number in your logbook), which only works if the car still has the radio it left the factory with. Radios are often swapped under warranty, upgraded, or changed by a previous owner.

The serial number is printed on the radio itself, so the code we give you matches the radio in front of you. It is also how we can check it for free before you pay. Main dealers often charge £30–£130, and you usually have to book the car in.

MG MGF radio code questions

Is the MGF radio the same as a Rover one?

Yes — the MGF shares its radios with the Rover range of the same years.

Where is the serial?

On the label on the radio case.

My handbook code is refused.

That code is for the radio the car left the factory with. Go by the serial on the radio that’s in the car now.

How much is a MG MGF radio code?

£9.99 per code. The free check comes first, so you only pay once we know we can do it, and you get your money back if the code doesn’t work.

How long does it take?

Most MG MGF codes appear on screen the moment you’ve paid, and we email you a copy. If yours has to be looked up by our team, we email it within 2 hours and tell you before you pay.

What if the code doesn’t work?

Check the serial first: 0 and O, or 1 and I, are easy to mix up. Still stuck? Tell us from your order page and we’ll put it right or refund you in full.
