What the serial looks like

Two numbers, one starting U and one starting L — U2154 L2135. Turn the ignition on with the radio off, hold buttons 1 and 6, then press the power button. Two short numbers appear, one starting U and one starting L. The U and the L are only labels for the top and bottom halves — type both numbers in and we put them together (U2154 L2135 is the serial 21542135). On some radios it is buttons 2 and 3 instead.
A serial on its own — 30001930 or 2602353. 7 or 8 numbers, on the screen or on the label. Type just the numbers, without the S/N.
On the glovebox label — B30001930. A letter B and then the eight numbers. Honda asked dealers to put this label inside the glovebox door so the serial was there if the radio ever locked. The B is not part of the serial.
Touchscreen (2013 on) — 975GU294. From the home screen go to Settings, then System, then Detailed information. On some cars it is in a Diagnostics menu instead: hold the audio power button. The serial is 8 letters and numbers.
Sat nav cars (2003 to 2012) — GNB22005937. Three letters and then eight numbers, on the label on the navigation unit — GNA, GNB, HBM and HFB are all real. The three letters say which unit it is, not which car. Sometimes there is one more letter after the numbers: leave that one off, it is not part of the serial and typing it gives an error. Hold MAP (or GUIDE), MENU and CANCEL together to see it on screen; on some cars it is SEEK/SKIP, CH/DISC and the power knob.
On the label. Cars from before 2002 don’t show the serial on screen, so the radio has to come out. It is on a sticker on the top, side or back, 6 to 14 characters long.

Find the serial

Check the handbook wallet for the anti-theft card first.
Turn the ignition on and leave the radio off. Hold buttons 1 and 6, then press the power button. Two numbers appear, one starting U and one starting L: write both down. The letters are only labels for the top and bottom halves — the numbers together are the serial.
Touchscreen (2013 on): go to Settings, then System, then Detailed information.
Older sat nav cars (2003–2012): hold MAP/GUIDE, MENU and CANCEL together.
Nothing on screen? Look inside the glovebox door: dealers were asked to stick a label there with the serial on it, written as a B and then eight numbers.
Off a label, the numbers may sit behind three letters or a B, and sometimes there is one more letter after them. Type the lot — we take the serial out of it.

With the radio off, hold the lit buttons and press the power button. The serial appears on the display.

Taking the radio out

Needs a pair of radio removal keys (a few pounds from any car parts shop). Push them in until they click, then ease the radio forward. Photograph the label rather than copying it by hand.

Enter the code

Press buttons 2, 5, 3, 1 and 6, in that order. The radio takes the last number by itself.

Most codes are 5 numbers. Press the button with each number on it, once.
Touchscreens: use the on-screen keypad and press ENTER.

Locked out?

ERR — leave the ignition on for 1 hour.
