Which radio is in your BMW 5 Series?

BMW fitted different radios over the years. Find your 5 Series’s years below, but go by the serial: radios are often swapped, and the free check reads it for you.

How to find your BMW 5 Series radio serial number

The serial isn’t shown on the screen: it is printed on a label on the radio itself. The serial tells us exactly which code your radio needs.

Where it is

On the label

  1. Some radios show it: hold DISP or DISPLAY for a few seconds.
  2. Otherwise take the radio out and take a photo of the label.
  3. Copy all 14 letters and numbers, like BP3782R3701682.

Take a photo of the label rather than copying it by hand: it’s easy to mix up 0 and O, or 1 and I.

RADIOPush both keys in until they click, then pull the radio forward

Most radios slide out with a pair of radio removal keys (a few pounds from any car parts shop). Push them into the slots on the front until they click, then ease the radio forward. Some have screws to undo first.

Tips for your BMW 5 Series

  • The unit comes out on removal keys; the label with the serial is on the top or the side.
  • Photograph the label instead of copying it — fourteen characters is a lot to get right by eye, and a wrong one is a wasted try.
  • Navigation units and anything matched to the car with its own key are a dealer job, not a code.

How to enter your BMW 5 Series radio code

Once you have your code, key it in like this. The example below shows the button presses. Your order page shows the same steps next to your code.

DISPLAY~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~!!!!!!CODE!!!!!!123456BUTTONS 1–6
Press button 1 twice for 2, button 2 five times for 5, button 3 eight times for 8, button 4 four times for 4, then hold button 5 for a couple of seconds to confirm.

Blaupunkt / Bosch

  1. Buttons 1 to 4 each set one number.
  2. Hold button 5 (or the tuning knob) to finish.
  3. Won’t go above 1 for the first number? Use the second code we give you.

If your BMW 5 Series radio says LOCKED, WAIT or SAFE

Each wrong code makes the radio wait longer before the next try, and some radios lock for good after too many. Don’t guess: get the right code first, then follow the steps for your radio.

RadioWhat to do
Blaupunkt / BoschAfter a wrong code, most Blaupunkt radios make you wait before the next try, and the wait gets longer each time. Leave the radio switched on until it asks for the code again.

Why we use your radio’s serial, not your number plate

A radio code belongs to the radio, not the car. A dealer usually looks it up from the BMW 5 Series’s number plate or VIN (the 17-character number in your logbook), which only works if the car still has the radio it left the factory with. Radios are often swapped under warranty, upgraded, or changed by a previous owner.

The serial number is printed on the radio itself, so the code we give you matches the radio in front of you. It is also how we can check it for free before you pay. Main dealers often charge £30–£130, and you usually have to book the car in.

BMW 5 Series radio code questions

Where is the serial on a BMW 5 Series radio?

On the label on the radio. The unit has to come out with removal keys — it is not on the screen.

Is the E39 Business RDS one you can do?

If it is Blaupunkt-built with a BP serial, yes. Type the serial into the free check and it tells you before you pay anything.

How much is a BMW 5 Series radio code?

£9.99 per code. The free check comes first, so you only pay once we know we can do it, and you get your money back if the code doesn’t work.

How long does it take?

Most BMW 5 Series codes appear on screen the moment you’ve paid, and we email you a copy. If yours has to be looked up by our team, we email it within 2 hours and tell you before you pay.

What if the code doesn’t work?

Check the serial first: 0 and O, or 1 and I, are easy to mix up. Still stuck? Tell us from your order page and we’ll put it right or refund you in full.
